2011 Super Bowl betting odds released

Monday, February 15th, 2010

The New Orleans Saints have only just lifted the Vince Lombardi Trophy and already the bookies have released odds on the winners of the 2011 Super Bowl.

The betting market for Super Bowl XLV is one of the most open for years with this year’s losing team, the Colts, installed as 9/1 favorites. The Saints are 10/1 second favorites to record back-to-back victories. Anyone thinking of betting the Colts needs to be aware of the curse of the Super Bowl loser – in the past eight years only one team has made the playoffs after losing in the Super Bowl.

The San Diego Chargers are the 11/1 third favorites, followed by the New England Patriots at 12/1. Next in the betting, all at 14/1, are the Dallas Cowboys, Minnesota Vikings and Pittsburgh Steelers. The Cowboys will especially hope to play in the Super Bowl as they are hosting it at their Arlington, Texas stadium on 6 February 2010.

The Green Bay Packers are listed next at 18/1, followed by the New York Jets at 22/1. The Baltimore Ravens and New York Giants are rated 25/1 shots, while the Atlanta Falcons, Tennessee Titans and Cincinnati Bengals can all be backed at 33/1.

All other teams are offered at 40/1 or bigger odds.

Super Bowl ad makes Leno a ratings winner again

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

Sunday’s Super Bowl made a star of the New Orleans Saints — and Jay Leno.

Here’ s a look at the week’s winners and losers:

Winners

– Super Bowl XLIV. Capturing 106.5 million viewers, Sunday’s game goes into the books as the most watched U.S. TV telecast in history, edging out the “M*A*S*H” finale, which had held the record for nearly three decades. After the game, the unveiling of CBS’s newest reality series, “Undercover Boss,” clocked nearly 39 million viewers — the third-biggest post-Super Bowl audience ever.

– Jay Leno. In his last full week on his dull-and-canceled NBC primetime show, Leno struggled to attract more than 4 million viewers. In 15 seconds on CBS on Sunday, however, Leno attracted more than 110 million viewers and turned a promo for “Late Show With David Letterman” into the most buzzed-about plug of the Super Bowl broadcast — totally upstaging Tim Tebow and his mom, Pam, stars of that antiabortion ad from an evangelical Christian group CBS had cleared to run in the game. That ad was tied as the least-watched ad of the game, according to Nielsen. It attracted 92.576 million viewers, which is also how many people watched that Snickers ad in which Betty White got tackled and hilarity ensued.

– “Puppy Bowl,” Animal Planet’s annual Super Bowl alternative, enjoyed its biggest sampling ever: Nearly 9 million viewers made a star of that bowl’s MVP, Jake the pughuahua.

– “Red Eye.” Fox News Channel’s snarky 3 a.m. comedy-cum-news show celebrated its third anniversary last week by clocking more 25-to-54-year-olds — the currency of news programming — than did any of CNN’s primetime programs. The show bagged 180,000 people in that age bracket. “Campbell Brown” settled for 155,000, “Larry King Live” 156,000 and “Anderson Cooper 360″ 163,000.

– “19 Kids and Counting.” TLC has found its Gosselin replacement family. The Duggars’ show opened its fourth season with 2.4 million tuned in — about a million more than their third-season opener.

Losers

– “The Sarah Silverman Program.” A sure sign that Silverman’s so over — only 767,000 tuned in to her season debut Thursday. Her previous season debut attracted 2.4 million. Buhbye, Sarah.

The Who Perform Hits Medley at Super Bowl XLIV Halftime

Monday, February 8th, 2010

The Who took the stage for the Super Bowl halftime show in Miami on Sunday, and delivered a solid if expected medley of classic rock hits.

Singer Roger Daltrey and guitarist Pete Townshend, the two surviving members of the original quartet, appeared on a circular stage in the center of Sun Life Stadium, accompanied by their backing band.

They played a nearly 12-minute set that included all or parts of five tunes: “Pinball Wizard,” “Baba O’Riley,” “Who Are You?,” “See Me, Feel Me” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again.” Townshend revealed the set list to Billboard during rehearsals two weeks ago.

The annual Super Bowl half time concert has become one of rock’s highest profile gigs, with U2, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Prince, the Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney each taking the stage in recent years. The medley format is not unusual for artists with such a deep catalog — Springsteen and Prince took a similar approach.

As in years past, the band was matched with an impressive light show, including a wide array of lasers and several blasts of pyrotechnics. The Who performed on a huge circular stage that played on the band’s recognizable bulls-eye logo, although this year, no fans were allowed on the field.

If the past is any indicator, The Who’s halftime hits medley will give the band a big sales boost. Last year, Bruce Springsteen used his appearance to mark the release of “Working On A Dream,” which hit stores the week before the big game. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 on the week culminating with Super Bowl Sunday, and stayed at No. 2 the following week.

Super Bowl MVP Betting

Friday, February 5th, 2010

By Kevin Taylor

EA Sports and John Madden looked into their crystal ball and did all bettors a favor by letting them know not only the outcome of Super Bowl XLIV, but the simulated game they ran yesterday also pegged the MVP.

I feel sorry for all of those who already bet on someone other than Drew Brees, as it was none other than the Saints’ signal-caller who won the award in the Madden NFL Super Bowl matchup.

Sportsbook online have had the Super Bowl MVP prop betting option up for over a week. It is always one of the more popular options for the sports betting public.

Madden’s MVP, Brees, is currently the second most popular option with bettors, sitting right behind, as you might expect, Peyton Manning.

QBs are usually a decent choice for super bowl betting, but history shows us that underdogs are worth looking at.

While Joe Montana, Terry Bradshaw and Bart Starr were among the top players on their teams when they won the Super Bowl and were awarded the Pete Rozelle MVP trophy, Otis Anderson, Larry Brown, Desmond Howard and Dexter Jackson rose to the occasion to achieve Super Bowl MVP immortality.

Obviously, Manning (-150) and Brees (+300) are favorites when it comes to this year’s MVP prop odds but there are a number of other players that could rise to the occasion.
